GarcÃÂa Márquez Essays
Garcà a Mrquez Essays Garcà a Mrquez Essay Garcà a Mrquez Essay Essay Topic: Chronicle Of a Death foretold Born in 1927, Marquez spent his earlier childhood with his grandparents in Aracataca village in North Columbia. Both of his grandparents very much influenced his upbringing. The major influence of his thoughts that later reflected in his writings and stories initiated here by his grandmother, a storyteller. He learnt from her, that storytelling and word of mouth, as opposed to written memory, is the place where weaving of the social fabric takes place. (King-193). This notion, later, became the most alluring feature of his writings. He was very motivated by the way ââ¬Å"she treated extraordinary as something perfectly natural.â⬠(reference 3) The underlying source of Garcia Mdrquezs literary inspiration was his grandmother, who lived in her own world of superstition and magic. It was from her captivating style of storytelling that he became fascinated and preoccupied with his interpretation of Magical Realism At the age of eight, his parents took him with them and later after attending school for some time, he was sent to Bogota on scholarship for his studies by the government. His writing career started in Bogota when he wrote his first novella Leaf Storm, published in 1955. Although he never completed his education, Columbia University awarded him honorary doctorate degree in writing. Gabriel Garcia Marquez started his early writing career through journalism while studying at the National University of Colombia. In 1948 and 1949, he wrote for El Universal. Then, from 1950-1952, he wrote whimsical columns in El Heraldo in Barranquilla. In December 1957, Garcà a Mrquez accepted a position in Caracas in the magazine Momento. During his time in Paris and Mexico, he wrote No One Writes to the Colonel and One Hundred Years of Solitude. Marquez focused on marvelous, so he was often misunderstood in his writings by the critics as fantasy was not so common at that time. Marquez treats the question of a rigid separation between realism and magic, which he insists does not exist. Since what is ordinary to some seems marvelous to others, fantasy should not be emphasized as a special entity; it is part of a much broader concern. He was more concerned in bringing a change in society and rules (Rave 38). Garcia Marquezââ¬â¢s entrancing style of interpretation of magical realism, inspired by his grandmother, was always in relation to reality. His magical-realistic approach, which provides a very appealing dimension of myth and imagination to his writings, despite his insistence that every single lineâ⬠¦ in all of my booksâ⬠¦ has a starting point in realityâ⬠( Minta 2.) Marquezââ¬â¢s novels are a reflection of events, giving them a realistic touch. Leaf Storm, his first, relates back in time to a funeral; One Hundred Years of Solitude reflects on its own production; The Autumn of the Patriarch begins with the death of a dictator-protagonist; Chronicle of a Death Foretold, whose title indicates certainty of death. His second novel, Love in the Times of Cholera written in 1985, does not fit in the pattern of the above writings. It concerns various aspects of memory. (King 193) His novels also contains flash-backs of events. Being a Columbian, the settings of most of his novels are small villages of Columbia. The magical setting of Macondo is the most notable among his works. In 1982 he became only the fourth Latin American writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. In his acceptance speech in Stockholm he remarked that the role of the Latin American writer is to continue to assert, in spite of despair, that human beings are capable of creating a different kind of futurewhere love will prove true and happiness be possible, and where races condemned . . . will have a second opportunity on earth. Hewlett Packards Supply Chain Management
Hewlett Packards Supply Chain Management Hewlett-Packard Supply Chain The Hewlett-Packard supply chain consists of ââ¬Å"manufacturing, research and development (RD) sites in 16 countries, and sales and service offices in 110 countriesâ⬠(Lee and Billington, 1995, p. 43).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Hewlett Packardââ¬â¢s Supply Chain Management specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More As suggested by Lummus and Vokurka (1999) in their study, supply chain cha be defined with the help of the following description, ââ¬Å"the processes from the initial raw materials to the ultimate consumption of the finished product linking across supplier user companiesâ⬠(p. 11). I other words, HP needed a supply chain that would make them more competitive than their rivals and enable them to deliver products manufactured on time in a timely manner. The supply chain later used in Hewlett-Packard was developed after weighing up the uncertainty issues, identifying a nd solving the data recording problems, trying to forecast the preferences of customers and probability of orders in future periods of the fiscal year. For instance, HP ââ¬Å"often contracts for raw materials eight months or more before the final product will reach finished goods inventoryâ⬠(Davis, 1993, p. 39). In this respect, the new strategy was called to analyzing the gaps and drawbacks and applying the latest inventions to the operation. Strategic Goals of HP As Hewlett-Packard deals with processing of orders, manufacturing of products and delivery, the companyââ¬â¢s CEO and president Lew Platt recognize the necessity of changes and improvements and introduced new strategic goals. So, Lew Platt identified the key strategic goals for the company in the period of 1993 fiscal year as the most important ones to win the competitive battle and order fulfilment became the top important issue for the managerial. In other words, the companyââ¬â¢s goal was to analyze the un certainties with regard to operational performance and improve the delivery of products as a part of the supply chain. This supply chain supports the strategic goals of Hewlett-Packard designed for this period by improving the fulfilment of orders as a part of supply chain.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? So, the goal of order fulfilment was supported by improved supply chain that was also improved. HP supply Chain As analysis of supply chain was performed, each site identified the prioritizing areas of concern and the areas for investments. In this respect, the strengths of the HP supply chain include that it enables the company to make adequate decisions on each order and fulfil the order in a timely manner attracting more customers and developing the customer loyalty. Besides, supply chain modelling transferred to HP made it possible to map out the problems and identify the less effective areas and solve problems with regard to the identified gaps. The weaknesses of supply chain still include inventories that depend on forecasting of customer demands and analysis of uncertainties that always occur in any business. The only thing that can be done on this issue has been applied to Hewlett-Packard by prioritizing the area for investment by excluding uncertainties in turn. However, all these weaknesses can be contrasted to strengths that make HP one of the leading companies due to their advanced supply chain management. Reference List Davis, T. (1993). Affirmative action in the workplace Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Affirmative action in the workplace - Essay Example This does not mean that they are handed over positions without qualification. They are qualified similar to the men but because of the marginalization and historical differences, they are not regarded as equal to the others and they therefore lack representation. The affirmative action that will be focused on this essay is that of gender in the workplace. One of the advantages of having affirmative action is that women get to have their fair share of representation in higher positions of power and decision making. This leads to the issues that are specific to females only to be addressed. The voices of women are now also heard which was not the case in the past. In having their voices heard and considered, the other women in the workplace can be sure that they will no longer be ignored but will have equality with the men. Women face their own shares of issues and especially those that have families. They will have small children that require being looked after and not all can afford to hire nannies or put them in day care system. This group of women may require having a room set aside in the workplace as a play area fort the children. This will allow the women to bring their children to work and get to monitor them throughout the day as well. For those breastfeeding, they should be allowed a nursing room to breastfeed their children or milk the breast milk with privacy. This is not something that men understand and hence can only be brought forward and campaigned by a many women voices to be addressed for increased productivity. When the workplace has diversity in terms of almost equal number of men and women, it is likely to attract more investors and customers and especially those who support feminism. This will not only increase business and productivity but will provide a higher chance of opening up other branches even globally and spread the idea of affirmative action (Estlund 147). Women provide a nurturing

Analysing Of The Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Analysing Of The Paper - Essay Example I specifically like this statement which defines how business organizations should go about the extension: "Unless the Brand name is strategically able to brand its extension to their customers and is capable to achieve this goal through similarities then and only then the success is higher. A company should extend their products as long as it is appropriate and along the lines of their products and or services. But, if the company wishes to expand to a class and or category different or other than what they are in, then there is a higher chance of failure." Do you mean that different brands should be used in different sectors or categories Your discussion is very informative. Instead of focusing only in the advantages and disadvantages of brand extensions, you have made the leap through identifying the steps which should be considered by marketers. My question is, can you discuss more on distancing techniques How is it done Richard Branson's extreme personality should be credited for his venture in numerous unrelated product categories.

Compare constitutional protections of aboriginal rights in Canada to Essay
Compare constitutional protections of aboriginal rights in Canada to comparable rights protections in another country with an indigenous population - Essay Example dispensation in Canada indicate that the Canadian government has demonstrated interest in creating clauses that would not only promote the rights of the aboriginals, but also group them under a special category which would enable the community to enjoy government protection. In a bid to illustrate the involvement of various governments in protecting the rights of aboriginals, the paper would compare the constitutional protection of the aboriginal rights in Canada and Australia. Both Australian constitution and Canadian constitution recognizes the aboriginal community and the Torres Straight Islanders. This step is critical in strengthening the rights of the aboriginal community in the two countries. However, the constitution of respective countries seems to project or define the extent of protection that it can provide to the aboriginal community. For instance, in both cases, the constitution of the two countries stipulates that it will promote the culture and tradition of the aboriginal community in the present time and in the future. According to the provision of this clause, the constitution defines the protection of the cultural activities of the aboriginal community (Uribe, 2004:1-18). The cultural right includes indigenous practices and traditions that are synonymous with the indigenous community. The enactment of the section 35(1), Constitutional Act 1982 of the Canadian constitution does not only recognize, but also affirms the existence of the aboriginal treaty rights. The Supreme Court decision in the sparrow case indicated that the section 35(1) has set new dimension of protecting the rights of the aboriginals. Available literature indicates that it supersedes the colonial landmarks, which barred the Canadian aboriginal from some fundamental rights (Uribe, 2004:1-18). On the contrary, the Australian constitution fails to demonstrate the protection of the Indigenous rights. The Krugerââ¬â¢s case is one of the historical instances where the protection of

International Students Essay Example for Free
International Students Essay Most young people believe that studying in a different country is a privilege because they are able to experience other cultures, and learn from them. However, in the United States it is not as good as they thought because International students have much more pressure being in this country, and sometimes they cannot handle it very well. Therefore, in the United States the life of an international student is very unfavorable if people compare it to the life of an American student. International students have to learn a new language to study, they cannot work while studying, and their tuition is much more expensive. When people moves to the United Stated to study they imagine that it will be very helpful, and they believe that learning a new language (English) will not be a problem. However, when they really start studying their major, they find out that it is not easy since people have to really understand and appreciate the language. First of all, in order to have success in university in the United States people have to compose a number of essays which if people do not understand their structure, they will be incorrect , so international students have to really learn English, and they have to know how to write it in order to have success. Also, for them to have success in university they have to participate in class, and analyze an amount of readings, and because they are international students, it is very difficult to achieve since they believe that Americans are going to laugh at them or make jokes of them if they say something incorrectly. For example, some Americans do not realize sometimes how hard is for international students being in a different country, with different people, learning a new language, and experiencing different cultures, so some of them do not really appreciate the effort that international students put on being in the United States. They just think that it is easy and do not care about how they feel. On the other hand, American students since they are in middle school they are taught how to write very good essays , so when they get in college they do not have any problem creating essays. They know their structure and have a very superior vocabulary, so they can compose excellent essays. In addition, since American students speak English very well, they do not have any problem participating in class. They have confidence in themselves, so they will not be afraid of saying something wrong. Consequently, because American students do not have to learn any language to study their mayor, it is much easier for them to achieve excellent grades. Most university students feel the necessity of working since they would like to have their own money in order to be independent from their parents. It is not the exception for International students because they also feel the necessity of working to be independent from their parents or whoever is responsible for them. However, for international students to work in the United States it is very difficult because they are only allowed to work on campus. These kinds of jobs are very limited since some of the campuses in which they study are very small. Also for an international student to find a job on campus is difficult because people prefer to employee an American student who is not going to have any problem speaking the language. For example, last semester a friend from Venezuela who is studying at Miami Dade College decided that he wanted to get a job in order to have his own money. He went to every single place where he could be employee. However, when he went to all these places, all the people told him that at that time they did not need any person, so he realize that to get a job on campus was very difficult, and not only that but a few weeks later he noticed that a new person was working in the campus coffee, so he proves that for an international student to get a job on campus is very difficult. On the contrary, American students can work wherever and whenever they want and it does not matter if they are studying or no. They can have their own money and support themselves while being in university. As a result, the fact that they can work while studying really helps them to have more confidence and to achieve better possessions. Because American students can work while studying, it is better to be a citizen of the United States than an international student. The most important difference between International students and American students is the tuition that they pay. International students are require to pay a very expensive tuitions if it is compare with the tuitions that American students have to pay. The tuition is very inequality, and it is only because they are international al students. Sometimes it seems to be very difficult for international students to pay the tuition because it is very expensive. For instance, an international student who studies in Miami Dade College is require to take twelve credits or more per semester which represents three thousand seven hundred dollars. However, an American student only has to pay for the same amount of credits twelve hundred dollars per semester. It is very inequality and unfair that just because they are from a different country, they would have to pay so much more money than an American student. On the contrary, it is very easy for American students to pay the tuition that the university requires. They can even pay for it with their own money. Therefore, it is easy for them to achieve their goals, and to have their independency from their parents. In conclusion, an international student has to put a lot of effort if he or she wants to be success in college. However, although American students also have to put a lot of effort to be success, it is easier for them since they already know the language, they can work while studying, and their tuition is pretty much inexpensive. Also, people have to keep in mind that being an American student is a privilege, and they should take advantage of it in order to achieve their goals in life.

Market Based Accounting Research Impacts
Market Based Accounting Research Impacts Market-based Accounting Research Introduction Accounting provides financial data about the performance of a company. This data enables accounting information users, including investors, to take their decisions about investing in the shares of a company. Similarly, accounting research evaluates the usefulness of this accounting data to investors and other users. The relationship between the two can be examined through market-based accounting research. Market-based accounting research is a search into relationship between publicly disclosed accounting information and the consequences of use of this information by equity investors. In other words, market-based accounting research examines the association between accounting numbers and security return and tests whether or not accounting data carry any information content to security market. Rationale for the Research Market-based Accounting Research is extremely relevant to the study of capital market efficiency, CAPM, information economics and regulation. The main drive of market-based accounting research comes from major developments in finance theory during the last few decades, especially in late 50s and early 60s. These developments include portfolio selection theory, Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM), and the concept of information-efficient capital markets followed by developments in information economics, agency theory and optimal incentive-signaling models. The rationale of this study has its basis in the research in this area in the past. Over the past three decades, a significant amount of research in market-based accounting research has emerged to evaluate the usefulness of accounting data to investors and the association between the accounting numbers and security return. In fact in the recent years due to development of capital markets, globalization and increase in stock trading, market-based accounting research has become even more important. Contemporary market-based accounting research has primarily focused on its international dimension which has had important policy implications for regulators and others who deal with disclosure requirements in different stock exchanges. The focus of this dissertation will be on examining how market-based accounting research impacts the kind of common stock traded in major stock exchanges. In light of this, the study will examine the relationship between accounting numbers, stock market returns and market valuations. Key Aims Objectives As indicated above, the prime focus of the study is to examine contemporary accounting theory and research with an emphasis on market-based accounting research and its impact on capital markets. As market based accounting research is based on the valuation of firms and their securities, the use of financial statements for valuation purposes, and the implications for financial reporting and corporate governance, all these areas will form a part of this study. The study aims to: Describe the concept of market based accounting research Identify the information content of market-based accounting research Provide an insight into local market conditions as well as comparative international state of market-based accounting research. Examine the role of market-based accounting research and the importance of disclosure of accounting information on capital markets Examine how published information is used by investors for designing their trading strategies Describe how market-based accounting research information impacts the capital markets efficiency Describe accounting based valuation and relate it to the content of brokersââ¬â¢ reports Key Research Questions The three key research questions proposed to be examined by this study are: What is the role of accounting information in capital markets? What is the information content of accounting information? What is the market-based accounting research hypothesis in context of influence on investors investing in stocks? Another key research question is how the market reacts to reported earnings, as well as the impact of reported earnings on the properties of analystsââ¬â¢ forecasts. These questions, especially the information content of accounting information, can be measured by the influence of the information on security prices. While measuring the influence it is assumed that investors can understand the differences in earnings that are due to differences between accounting methods. In other words, the study is based on efficient market hypothesis or the assumption that stock prices accurately and quickly adapt to all available information and therefore prevent individuals from getting abnormal return. Proposed Research Methodology Sources of Data / Information The study will be both exploratory as well as descriptive and will rely on both primary as well as secondary sources of information. Sampling for Primary Information Primary data will be collected from a sample consisting of both brokers as well as individual and institutional active investors who have invested in equity shares in a few pre-selected companies listed on the US or European stock exchanges. The period of investment will be from 2000-2006 as 6 years is a sufficient time to analyse the impact. These investors will be chosen on the basis of the frequency with which they invest in the securities. Data will be collected by administering questionnaires seeking information on how these investors make an investment decision. Sources of Secondary Information The prime source of secondary data will be: Annual reports of the selected companies under consideration. The variables that will be focused upon will include stock returns, dividends, net income on sale, return of equity, return on asset, debt ratio, interest coverage, current ratio, Price-earning ratio and price. The final report will be supplemented with information from: Literature searches ( refer list of references at the end of the document ) Past articles and research in the area Internet searches: Searching specific data from Yahoo and Google search engine Data Analysis Data will be compiled into data master sheets. The statistical description for all the variables will be presented in a separate table. The various sets of information pooled over the five year period of study will be clearly presented in the table in context of the various variables. The standard deviation and also correlation between the variables and the stock return will be determined and analysed. Correlation will be based on Karl Pearsonââ¬â¢s method of correlation. In addition to standard deviation and correlation, regression analysis will also be used for examining the market reaction to reported accounting information. Regression is used for analysis of impact of independent variables on the dependent variable. The dependent variable for regression analysis will be stock returns while the independent variables will be dividends, Net income on Sale, return of equity, return on asset, debt ratio, interest coverage, current ratio, and price-earnings ratio. Regression equations will be solved using Ordinary Least Square method (OLS). Qualitative data gathered from the investors may include opinions of respondents on a certain issues, reasons for certain behaviour and descriptions of certain procedures, practices or perceptions with which the researcher is not familiar. The data can be analysed by classifying all answers into a few categories. References Abeyratna, G, A.A.Lonie, D.M. Power and C.D.
